"We’ve heard time and again from members of the community who’ve been clamoring to know when we’re going to install another organ. "Without a pipe organ, the Oriental Theatre has truly felt incomplete," said Jonathan Jackson, CEO and artistic director for Milwaukee Film, in a statement released Thursday morning. The organ will be installed as part of MKE Film’s continuing restoration of the Oriental Theatre, which opened in 1927 with a Barton organ that was built in Oshkosh, but removed in 1959.

Now, Milwaukee Film – which holds a 31-year lease on the East Side movie palace – has announced the acquisition of a 1925 Wurlitzer three-manual instrument, Style 260, Opus 1097 pipe organ, thanks to organ restoration specialist Jeff Weiler. When the club dissolved in 2017, it sold the organ, which was removed from the Oriental just over a year ago. “If you build a great instrument, people will come play it.From 1979 until last year, the Oriental Theatre was home to the Kimball Theatre Organ Society and its vintage Kimball organ, which had been installed in the Warner Theater Downtown when that stunning Art Deco venue opened. It’s a Field of Dreamsapproach, says Woelbing. President and antique instrument enthusiast Paul Woelbing discovered his 40,000-square-foot warehouse had good acoustics, so he decided to install an organ with the help of Jelani Eddington, dubbed “the official organist of Carma Laboratories.” The massive instrument is slated for completion in 2011. New theatre organ construction is unusual, but it’s happening at Carma Laboratories (yes, Carmex) in Franklin. Remarkably, the Riverside’s Wurlitzer is the original 1928 installation. The instruments at Organ Piper and the Oriental were created from remnants at defunct venues like the old Grand and Avalon theaters.

Diners can barely hear each other speak, but don’t seem to mind. The massive white Wurlitzer dwarfs 78-year-old Ralph Conn, whose bombastic versions of “The Phantom of the Opera” and “That’s Entertainment” echo throughout the spacious dining room of Organ Piper Pizza.
